i actually have wine.. but im not so sure on how to configure it.. still i could figure it out lol... but i guess the question is would it be easier for me to stick with the server 2003 enterprise.. or do you think it would run faster on a ubuntu platform? this is mostly just curiosity asking.. because my trinity server is running fine.. but i was hoping to stream line it alittle bit and make it move faster with less background stealing resources..
thanks guysPosted 1 year ago » Permalink

Having it run on win2003 will beat Ubuntu + wine in terms of performance any day. Its because using wine is having another layer of software running to bog down your performance. The best solution would be to compile and run your stuff directly from a Linux distro. Its a little difficult at first, but will be very stable and quick. (Even quicker if you do it via cli). and yes, you do have apache, php, sql, the works on any linux distro.
Unless you are planning on learning how to compile on Linux, I recommend sticking with win2003.Posted 1 year ago » Permalink

Hola, Nexus!
I, too, am currently running Ubuntu (Hardy Heron, which I believe is either 8.04 or 8.10, I forget). Unfortunately, I realized that the repacks that Reaper releases will not work on Ubuntu (even in Wine) because the Trinity software requires the computer to possess .NET 3.5. At present, Wine really doesn't support any sort of .NET software (although some say the program Mono is a good alternative, though I personally haven't had much luck with it).
If you wish, you could always download the program Winetricks (should be available in the repositories), which is a handy tool that will automatically add (and configure) certain Windows programs, like DirectX and .NET (again, I haven't had much luck with .NET period, so you were warned).
The basic configuration I've set up, is that I have taken a much older computer (running about 512MB of RAM) and am using that as the server machine. I can still log in and play on Ubuntu (just make sure you add the video output to OpenGL, or else it might go screwy).
If you're unsure of how to add OpenGL to the config file in your WoW directory, you should be able to find a good answer here (just browse the posts a bit):

You should also check out Crossfire. Much like Winetricks, it automates installs and auto-configures certain programs. It is based off wine. Im not sure if its free anymore though. It does WoW automatically. Configuring wow for linux is really easy, there are many many guides on how to do it.

It is very unfortunate that Trinity was created with a non-cross platform compatible library like .NET
While .NET has many conveniences it is a bad (even unethical) choice to use anything that is purposly non-cross platform.
Perhaps someone will rewrite the Trinity engine using more standard libraries.
