Need Help with Trinity Core - Strange latency problem

First of all, this is my first post. I installed Trinity Core Repack Release V1 for Wow 3.1.3. With the help of the excellent guides on this site, everything installed and started working like a champ. I have a computer dedicated as being the server. I gave the server my public IP address. From another machine, I modified my realmlist.wtf file to have only my public IP address. It connects me just fine and everything appears to work. However my latency stays very high, sometimes as high as 15000.

Now, I can give the server a private IP and then make the changes in the realmslist file with the private IP and all is well with no latency problem. However, just for fun of course, I'd like to use my public IP.

Can anyone think of a reason why using my public IP would be causing this latency issue? Any help would be most appreciated.

    possibility #1
It may depend on the processing power of your router. The switching side of your router (Lan -> Lan) seems to be running fine, but when it needs to do actual routing (Lan -> Wan -> Lan) it may slow down because of packet queing. You may try to use QoS (quality of service) a.k.a. "Game Fuel" accoring to dlink to give priority to your server ports 8085 & 3724 (or whatever ports you use) and see if that helps.

    possibility #2
If your latency says its incredibly high yet you dont experience any choppyness during ingame from your Lan->Wan->Lan, its nothing to be worried about. It just incorrectly determines the ping/icmp speed client side. You are really getting the same speed as your Lan -> Lan with the only issue being the speed is incorrectly measured.

    Im guessing its possibility #2

Hi daggo. Thanks for the reply. It is not Possibility 2 for sure. If I cast a spell, it will finally cast about 10 seconds later. Now here is another strange thing I discovered today. I had a friend access the game remotely and it plays fine for him. As soon as I logged in, my latency was high and it caused his to skyrocket as well. We both had like a 10 second delay. He said everything was just fine until I logged in. I didn't even think of QoS so I turned it on, but it made no difference.

I still have the server public, and I tried on my local client machine both the local address of the server and the public address. Both will connect fine, but they both exhibit the same latency problem. I got a feeling this is something really simple, but I just can't put my finger on it.

    Any other ideas?

Problem solved. It was my stupid router after all, but not a settings problem. The router is a linksys WRT54G. I noticed I also had a problem making VPN connections to my work. After doing some searching I found that lots of people are having the same issue and that there is no fix from linksys. So, I found on the web where someone makes custom firmware for routers, especially linksys routers. The website is ddt-wrt.com. After putting in the custom firmware everything works perfectly, including my VPN connections. Maybe this will help some other poor soul in the future. Cheers!!
