I am completly new to the whole private server world. I've tried a few private servers and I wanted to try and make one for myself just for fun.

My wow Client is currently 2.3.3 and that is the same server version that I am running.

I have tried both mangos and Ascent and worked through a few other issues. (didnt realize I had to depatch from 2.4)

but here are the issues i am running into now...

with Ascent I was able to log in and it asks me to pick a game server and when i choose mine it attempt to connect to it then it asks me to pick it again. This process just continues endlessly

Then I tried Mangos since i had it installed on the computer as well, I got all the way to where I created my character and then I attempted to enter the world and the client crashed.

I'm at a loss here. I'm so very close I can taste it!
Any help would be great. Thanks

You are very close, I would guess. The problem (most-likely) is with port settings.

Check my reply in the other post:

Hope that helps. Good luck, and happy gaming! :)

    Thanks for the quick response!

Thats one thing I was thinking, however the server is on my lan and I am only using a switch, no router is involved so I know that the ports on a router is not what would be doing anything. I also have all third party firewalls on the computers turned off so that couldnt be it either. I just kinda stuck :P

Do you have (by chance) Windows Firewall enabled? I would try enabling your firewalls and simply allowing the ports you're using access, rather than shutting them down (I've heard of some firewall programs that, when simply shut off, go into a "nothing gets through" mode as a security measure, though it's been a while since I heard that).

If you're just running off your rig, make sure your realmlist.wtf file is "127.0.0.1" and that your realm IP address is the same (you can check /alter it using a program like Navicat, if you have it).

If you are using Windows Firewall, make sure in the Exceptions tab you make entries for the two ports (mine are "World" and "Realm").

The thing is that it only does this when trying with Ascent, When I use Mangos it will connect to the server fine it just wont load me into the game without crashing the client. So I know that its not a security issue.

Well, first of all, I wouldn't "mix 'n match" server programs. Pick one, and stick to it. I had that difficulty when I started. I used Antrix (what later became Ascent) and then switched to mangos. If your client is crashing upon entry, it could be that you're missing some necessary files (Maps or DBCs, I would guess). If you haven't already, make sure you follow Reaper's tutorial on that.

    http://www.reaper-x.com/2007/10/10/wow-mangos-map-vmaps-and-dbc-extraction-guide/

Also (and this is critical) make sure you put the Maps, DBC, & Vmaps folders into the designated server file (also talked about in the tutorial). If they're not there, then WoW will literally crawl out of your computer, slap you in the face, and tell you, "The Princess is in another house, go away." (Don't laugh...it did it to me, once.. @_@; ).
