just tried to fiddle around with the table in mysql using navicat lite...successfully (more or less) added a new item but I went and made some revisions on it, and it wouldn't update unless I gave it a new id
problem is the old item info is still there and the id it used to have is unusable now (whenever I try to reuse that id it'd just load up the old item)
is there any way to clean that up?

Yep, just clean the wow cache files in your wow installation folder, and the new info on your old item will show up.

    Best regards...

that did it, thanks. Will I have to ask the other players on my server to do the same?

That's a client stuff, so yes, but only in case they were in contact with your old item before you changed it again, if you want them to see it updated. Otherwise, they don't need to do that.
And, by the way, I'm assuming you know that's only visual representation of your item that wasn't changed. All its properties and abilities are updated the moment you updated them in database.
Anyway, every player should delete those files occasionally just to be sure that he/she sees all changes made meanwhile.

    Best regards...

I wasn't sure if it was displaying incorrectly or plain wrong XD thanks for telling me that
all I knew was that somewhere it was saved independent of the table and dbc...but didn't know where or what to do with it
still fairly new with messing around in the tables but digging around in the posts here have done wonders

    You're welcome.
Well, if you already make custom items, then you're on the right track :-)
