Finally, I've seen many unofficial forums stating the blizzard is now taking down illegal popular server sites.
Here is the current list, because they have been shutdown it is legal for me to say there full names. You can visit each one of theese for proof.
    Toxic Wow
    Chaos Crusade
    WoW Scape
    WoW Gasm

    On Ani-wow

    Q u o t e:
Update (12/04/0 8) : We're sorry to inform our users (you) that our "World of Warcraft" server will be closed, due to a "legal DMCA" complain letter from "Blizzard Entertainment Inc".

We've received the letter this morning, and it's been confirmed to be real, we have to get rid of all "World of Warcraft" content within 24/hours, and for obvious reasons we have agreed to cooperate with this DMCA letter and close "AniWoW" down..

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blizzard Entertainment is taking serious action to take down all unauthorized private "WoW" game servers/and or content related to "illegal use of emulators" within the next days..

    - This isn't just for us, all private servers will eventually receive this letter, as there's a huge list of private servers listed in the DMCA letter...
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We sincerely ask you to please take this under moderation, and NOT to blame Blizzard for their actions. They deserve the right to do what they did.

It's been a fun time, and we appreciate and thanks all our users for the support and cooperation in making our community a fun place for everyone. This however, have come to a end.. and we believe this to be our final good bye.

(We'll be opening a "community" forum, NOT related to "World of Warcraft" within the few days. So if you still want to keep in touch with members from our previous community, we'd like to ask you to stay tuned for more information regarding this notice).

    AniWoW ( 1 Years, 6 Months, 4 days... )
    May 10, 2007 - December 04, 2008...

Once again, thank you all! *drops a tear*

Well, I expected that to happen much earlier. Blizzard people have just been lazy so far.

    Edit:
    ------
I haven't checked, but after reading a bit of that blizzard forum thread, it seems that those servers might be still up and that all of this is simply BS.

Also, if server is hosted in the country which doesn't give sh*t about foreign companies' or any others copyrights, blizzard can do nothing about that even if it has some rights. At least that's my humble opinion...

just checked several forums and blog topic about this, and im not sure whether it's true or not. But one thing for sure is, i can't access any big servers out there (some doesn't give any explanation at all while aniwow put an explanation). But of course Blizzard can shut them down anytime they want because they've violated Blizz ToS

I found out was happened.....solflayer rents servers for a price, most of the huge private servers used there service. Blizzard contacted them and told them to shut down any server that was running anything related to a wow emulator's and they wanted all the infomation on those servers or blizzard was going to take further action. I don't know whats going to happen to those poeple that where paying the companys. I do agree blizzard owns parts of what people are doing with the servers, but hell, me and my friends played on private servers like toxic-wow for about 6 months then we went to retail and paid the monthly fee and played on both servers. If blizzard realized or did some research on private servers they are a marketing tool, if pepole have the cash they will pay to play cause private servers are only about 70% stable and functional(at least the ones i played on with hundreds of people) But what upsets me the most is that blizzard shuts them down right before Christmas so that kids will ask for wow for Christmas, most familys with multiple children can't afford it(i am one of them) I paid retail for myself and played on the free ones with my 3 children. But since blizzard has done this, me and my friends stoped paying retail and starting to donate that monthly fee to development of wow private servers.

Keep in mind that a private server is not illegal to have, nor is it illegal to operate. But it IS against the terms to use it to try to make a profit with it whether it be used for promoting your site to get more paid advertisements or to accept "donations" for ingame benefits. The larger private game hosts were taken down for this reason. Private servers are geared for an educational experience directed to users to learn how to build and maintain a private game server. Of course its disappointing to see that Blizz would take the hammer to some of the game hosting sites, it actually surprised me that some of them lasted this long. But that shouldn't stop you from hosting your own or looking for other sources to check out other private servers and learn how each admin make their realm unique. That being said, if you own your own private server, keep it clean (ad free), keep it free, and you shouldn't feel threatened by the actions Blizzard has taken. My server stays up.

and I say amen daggo, I agree. This whole community was formed around learning first, WoW just happened to be a game that was popular enough to emulate for training purposes. I mean come on guys, it takes a hell of alot to have a complex database being used/modified by say even 2000 people. Try maintaining a network that supplies resourses to 20k users.

Besides this comes down to how the "game server" is run. Like daggo said ""keep it free"", keep it GPL http://www.gnu.org/licenses/licenses.html
my friends and I use things like this to learn....practice....and thoerize with. Our server stays up too daggo (albiet on a smaller machine currently...lol)
