I all,
I have a problem on my Windows Vista that began afetr the purchase of an external Hard Disk Freecom.
A few days afetr the purchase I disconnected it while it was writing and, since that moment, every time I connect and disconnect it, the PC go to freeze mode for 5 minutes.
The same thing happen even if the hard disk is disconnected: every time I start windows it go to freeze a little after the password, and every time I connect and disconnect a usb device.
I have looked for the solution everywhere, updated windows, unistalled and installed the hard disk from the device manager but I solved the problem only when I restored a recent backup.
Yesterday the Hard disk was writing a backup while Vista was installing the updates; at the end of the proceure windows restarted automatically and the problem began again!!!
The Pc go to freeze when it starts, every time I connect or disconnect the hard disk, an usb earphone that has always worked switch on but there is no audio and I don't know how many others usb devices will have problems.
Has anyone an idea to solve this problem before I throw out of the window Vista or the the hard disk?
Thank you

Post current system specs please.

Start up World of warcraft and pirates online and check your ram utilage via system monitor. If your ram is maxed out, your computer will resort to memory swapping which means that it will use a part of the hard disk as ram and then in turn slow down performance. If it is not utilizing all the ram, then your fine, go with the video card. The video card will give you a more direct boost in performance. Video cards take the load off of your native cpu and ram and render games/movies seperately. So in short, unless your computer isnt starving of ram, go with a video card.

I'm looking into upgrading my CPU to improve my gming speed on games like Pirate online and of course World of Warcraft. I have 512 MB of ram but I'm not sure what video card i have etc etc. All I know is that on especially Pirates Online, the lag is bad enough that I really want to upgrade and I'm tired of low graphics settings. What would be better for me to upgrade, my video card, or my ram, because I know 512 isn't all that much. Any ideas?

@madwolf
Thanks for the heads up about the beta driver being more stable, I am sure as it comes into more fullstream use the drivers base will have stabilzed, like I have said before, video drivers are there biggest concern because of moving to DX 11 and Win XP is DX 9.... since no one moved to Vista ( 9 to 12% penetration into market) and hence DX 10 (flop itself) they are having a hard time with video support from the diehard XP fans. ( I was one btw, but now Win 7 and IE8 have swept me off of my feet)

P.S. Noone should be installing programs into the "program files" folder anymore, that was Vista's biggest problem. Noone realized that Vista was restricting access to that folder, and was storing program settings in a users folder. WARNING - Win 7 does the same thing, so I suggest you NOT install anything to the program files folder. Doing so will cause a "split installation" anytime you install something , as it is saving your configuration in the users folder.

Oh yeah, it's good.... however .... it may not work well with some older hardware. Video cards in particular because of MS moving on to Direct X 11.

@ Nexus2322
Yeah I remember "Longhorn" since we had it in college in the tech dept. (hell we had every piece of MS software) and they crapped it up and released it as Vista....lol. I have had good and bad with Vista, but 7 seems to take care of all of that. An OS that can scale itself to the machine it's on, and is very network aware.

But i keep getting confused in the old guide posted... Would the easy installer be able to work with the 3.0.9 files? Or is it completely set up with the files already...

@ gothteen ... well you may be right on some systems. I however have had absolutely no problems running IE8 under windows 7. No bugs, no problems, no BSOD....ever..... and I have been running win 7 / IE8 for over 4 months now. My only technical problem is my video card isn't supposed to support DX 10 or 11, and really it doesn't. But I only get a problem in graphics intensive games where after 4 or more hours I have overheated the vid card, and it does a memory dump and reloads windows. Otherwise, no problems, no glitches, no bugs, no BSOD. And I, like others, have tweaked my IE8 install to only do what I need it to, no annoying pop-ups, limited flash banners (only when I allow them on per site basis, or or if I have allowed pop-ups + flash media to run on a given site). I know alot of people are not gonna like this, but Win 7 with IE 8 is just fine. (english language) Matter of fact, I think micro-crap has finally gotten it right with Win 7 / IE 8. But since I only have a BA in Computer Technology, I dont know much

@ Aekom your post assumes web users have much if any brains at all, and uh, firefox is just a bad, if not worse about fixing known bug/security holes in thier browser.....thats why I stopped using it altogether.

Go with Firefox and the Ad-Block Plus addon.

It's all you need in a browser, it blocks out 99% of adverts and popups, you wont get any bloat toolbars and useless features that slow down the comp like you would with others.

People with brains always use this setup.

I have to dis-agree with Veteran, ie8 is an enjoyable tour full of bugs, pc blackouts, bsod's (didn't know they existed on Windows 7 and windows vista, but hey, mister gates still give us some great stuff that does not work for the first 3 years or so, so i have to give him some slack).

I stick with Firefox and opera, chrome is something i dont use, i guess i hate google to much or something, vinden.nl is the search page here in holland, witch i use all of the time (links opens in new pages and thats what i need )

Thanks for the heads up, to let other net surfers know that the bandwidth you pay for isnt always at max speed. What you want to accomplish dictates the type of connection and amount of downstream/upstream bandwidth you need.

Ok... after 1 month of testing the only problem I find is that since the video drivers are XDDM instead of WDDM I obviously can't run the aero interface. I knew that would happen on my machine since the radeon 9250 can really only handle DirectX 9. The big problem with this is an extra fan on the video card only helps a little, the more graphics intensive games that I run, that faster the video card overheats/locks up. I get anywhere from 4 to 10 hours uptime depending on what I am doing. ...... will be getting new parts (mobo, proccesor, powersupply) as soon as I can. My overall vote on Windows 7 two thumbs up or
8 out of 10 stars. And with the annouced upgrade price being approximately only 90 USD , Microsoft may have finally gotten the core build right, for the right price.

ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) is a dedicated-connection switching technology that organizes digital data into 53-byte cell units and transmits them over a physical medium using digital signal technology. Individually, a cell is processed asynchronously relative to other related cells and is queued before being multiplexed over the transmission path.

Because ATM is designed to be easily implemented by hardware (rather than software), faster processing and switch speeds are possible. The prespecified bit rates are either 155.520 Mbps or 622.080 Mbps. Speeds on ATM networks can reach 10 Gbps. Along with Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) and several other technologies, ATM is a key component of broadband ISDN (BISDN).

ATM also stands for automated teller machine, a machine that bank customers use to make transactions without a human teller.

Cable internet is given through the local cable TV. A cable modem is used that enables Professional Website Design to hook up your PC to a cable TV line. The rate of transfer of data is about 1.5 Mbps. This data rate far exceeds that of the prevalent 28.8 and 56 Kbps telephone modems and the up to 128 Kbps of Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and is about the data rate available to subscribers of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) telephone service. A cable modem can be added to or integrated with a set-top box that provides your TV set with channels for Internet access. In most cases, cable modems are furnished as part of the cable access service and are not purchased directly and installed by the subscriber

The actual bandwidth for Internet service over a cable TV line is up to 27 Mbps on the download path to the subscriber with about 2.5 Mbps of bandwidth for interactive responses in the other direction. However, since the local provider may not be connected to the Internet on a line faster than a T-carrier system at 1.5 Mpbs, a more likely data rate will be close to 1.5 Mpbs.

In addition to the faster data rate, an advantage of cable over telephone Internet access is that it is a continuous connection
